TRUST NO ONE
'My Own Right'

Song story and background information

Dark and self-defiant rock track, dealing with bigotry and intolerance. 'My Own Right' can also be found on Trust No One's 2004 'Promo' promotional CD Sampler.

Although there is a specific subject behind this song, the lyrics are somewhat ambiguous. 'My Own Right' is someone standing up to their critics, and defiantly stating their case. It could be about racism, homophobia, or one of many other forms of intolerance. In actual fact, it's a person in their late twenties or early thirties who feels under constant criticism from older people who expect their examples of lifestyle to be followed unconditionally by all. It's kind of a song about diversity, and respecting everyone's differences of opinion.

Lyrics
I don't live to a business plan
I live exactly as I am
Without one single thing to prove
Least of all to the likes of you
And yet you lecture me on truths
Of how I'll "end up" just as you do
I think you're needing me on board
To stop you feeling insecure

I'm a person in my own right too
Don't curse me 'cause I'm not like you
And just because I won't conform
Don't mean you should be pouring scorn

Look down on me like I'm a fool
As I'm not living by your rules
When all the ideals you hold dear
Are bound together by your fears
And all the people that you lust
Are viewed through thinly veiled trust
Shining example to us all
To live and die by your own sword

I'm a person in my own right too
Don't curse me 'cause I'm not like you
And just because I won't conform
Don't mean you should be pouring scorn

So you capitulate and breed
Convince yourself it's all you need
You just can't bear to be alone
Doubt you could function on your own
But where's the passion in your life?
The spark that keeps the flame alight?
Now when I look at you I see
That fire has turned to jealousy

I'm a person in my own right too
Don't curse me 'cause I'm not like you
And just because I won't conform
Don't mean you should be pouring scorn
I'm a victim of my circumstance
You've never given half a chance
Yeah, maybe I don't know I'm born
At least I know I'm standing tall

So when you're old and had enough
And all the people that you've loved
Have long since gone or passed away
Well maybe then you'll feel the same

I'm a person in my own right too
Don't curse me 'cause I'm not like you
And just because I won't conform
Don't mean you should be pouring scorn
I'm a victim of my circumstance
You've never given half a chance
Yeah, maybe I don't know I'm born
At least I know I'm standing tall
