TRUST NO ONE
'Clutching At Straws (Remix)'

Song image
Song story and background information

Originally an acoustic ballad, this version of 'Clutching At Straws' has been remixed in the style of its live arrangement. The original version of 'Clutching At Straws' appears on the 'Hiding Inside Myself EP' and the 2004 'Promo' promotional CD Sampler.

With the original, acoustic version, we wanted to write a track that sounded a bit like Badly Drawn Boy's acoustic songs. This new version features an Arab Strap inspired drum machine, and additional acoustic guitar overdubs by Ben Fall. The lyrics are an innocent, almost twee romantic call to a potential companion.

Lyrics
I've known you for years, you've always been near
A friend and a confidant
But somehow that's changed, sensation so strange
And now it's you I want

We only have this one life
We only have so much time
To waste this one chance of potential romance
Could stop you from being mine

Wanting the world, it's true
Hoping you'll want it too
Will I one day be yours?
Am I clutching at straws?
Well, I'd make the effort for you

Too timid to say, then I go away
Rehearsing the lines I might say the next time
But I never do, and neither do you
Leaving clues in my head from words that were said

You've probably not thought it at all
You may have been dreaming of more
If you never try then neither will I
But is anyone ever sure?

Wanting the world, it's true
Hoping you'll want it too
Will I one day be yours?
Am I clutching at straws?
Well, I'd make the effort for you

Will I one day be yours?
Am I clutching at straws?
Well, I'd make the effort for you
Oh, I'd make the effort for you
Yes, I'd make the effort for you
